Colon/Rectum cancer or Colorectal cancer is the cancer of the colon and rectum. It has been reported to be the third leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth leading cause of cancer in females. The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored and the rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Both colon and rectum form a long muscular tube called the large intestine. Tumors of the colon and rectum are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine which further take the form of colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer can be present for several years before symptoms develop in a patient. Symptoms vary according to the location of the tumor in the large intestine .These cancers lead to partial bowel obstruction and can cause symptoms of constipation, narrowed stool, diarrhea, abdominal pains and cramps. Bright red blood in the stool indicates a cancerous growth near the end of the colon or rectum, further taking the form of colorectal cancer. Other symptoms include fatigueless, weakness, anemia, breathlessness, change in bowel habits, loss in weight etc.

Treatment of Colorectal cancer depends on the diagnosis results and the stage of the cancer. Physicians generally adopt the diagnosis procedures of colorectal cancer as digital rectal exam, faecal occult blood testing, colonoscopy, CT scans and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). After the confirmation of the colorectal cancer in diagnosis, the clinical stage and further treatment is started by the doctors. The types of treatment for colorectal cancer are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Surgery is the most common treatment for colorectal cancer followed by combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Treatment of colorectal cancer needs to be taken for prolonged period to get good results and further without any side effects. In combination with modern therapy, ayurvedic treatment can reduce the tumor size and prevent or reduce the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
