About Appendicitis
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is a finger-shaped pouch which projects from the colon on the lower right side of the abdomen. This disease generally causes pain in the lower right of the abdomen, but in most of the cases, pain begins around the navel and then moves further. This pain typically increases as inflammation worsens and then becomes severe. In general, appendicitis can occur at any age, but mostly, it occurs in people who are between the ages of 10 and 30.
What are the Symptoms of Appendicitis?
The pain that occurs during appendicitis may vary depending upon the age and position of appendix. This pain may seem to come from the upper abdomen, in case, you are pregnant, because appendix is higher during pregnancy. The common symptoms of appendicitis are listed below:
- Severe pain on the right side of the lower abdomen.
- Sudden pain which begins around the navel and then moves to the lower right abdomen.
- Pain worsens with coughing, walking or making other jarring movements
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite.
- Sometimes low-grade fever may worsen this condition.
- Constipation, diarrhea.
- Abdominal bloating is another common symptom.
What is the Cause of Appendicitis?
An infection that results from the blockage in the lining of the appendix leads to the appendicitis. Infection leads to the multiplication of the bacteria which in turn causes the appendix to become swollen, inflamed and filled with the pus. If this condition is left untreated, then appendix may rupture.
Diagnosis of Appendicitis
In general, a physical exam for appendicitis involves tenderness in the lower right side of the abdomen. The pain may be higher during pregnancy. If perforation occurs then it may lead to hardness and swelling in the stomach. A swollen, rigid belly is also a symptom of appendicitis. In addition to looking for tenderness, there are various tests which can be performed to confirm the diagnosis of Appendicitis. These tests include urinalysis, pregnancy tests, chest x-rays, abdominal imaging and pelvic exams.
Complications of Appendicitis
Appendicitis may cause serious complications, such as a ruptured appendix and the formation of pus filled pocket in the abdomen. A ruptured appendix can be life threatening and requires immediate surgery to remove the appendix. On the other hand, if the appendix bursts, the person may develop a pus filled pocket which may also require surgery.
