Larynx (the voice box) is one of the organs that help us to speak with the help of the vocal cords. It is located in the neck region and at the opening of the trachea i.e. windpipe. Hypopharynx is the part of the throat (pharynx) and lies behind the larynx. The main function of the hypopharynx is to make the entry of food around the larynx and then it passes into the esophagus. Cancers that start in the larynx are called 'laryngeal cancers' and cancers of the hypopharynx are called 'hypopharyngeal cancers'. Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are also known as 'head and neck cancers'. Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer begins when the cells in the larynx or hypopharynx grow abnormally as lumps called tumors. These tumors further spread to other parts of the body to form new advanced tumors. A laryngeal or hypopharyngeal tumor is a growth of abnormal cells which may be either non-cancerous or cancerous. Almost all laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are observed to start in the squamous cells in the throat and this type of cancer is also known as 'squamous cell carcinoma'.

Symptoms of laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer in an individual will certainly invite the attention of a doctor, who will start the diagnosis. The doctor will take a complete medical history of the affected individual and conduct physical exam which includes checking of neck, lips, gums and cheeks for the detection of lumps or tumors.

Physicians normally recommend the main treatment for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The main surgery for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer involves the surgical removal of the tumor.
