Overview
Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the blood and the bone marrow starts making more number of lymphocytes, which are not able to fight infection.Globally,it has been observed that this type of cancer gets worsened quickly if proper treatment is not given to the patient. As the number of lymphocytes increases in the blood and bone marrow, there is reduction in the number of healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets. The affected person easily gets infected, anemia and uncontrolled bleeding. This type of cancer can also been reported to spread to the central nervous system (CNS).
Symptoms of adult ALL include fever, fatigueness, feeling tired, easy bleeding, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, weight loss, severe pain in the bones, painless lumps in the neck region etc. First of all, diagnosis of adult ALL is started by the doctor. Tests are performed to find out its further spread to the central nervous system and other parts of the body. Important tests include chest x-ray, ultrasound examination and CT scan (computerized tomography).
Treatment of adult ALL is done in phases which include remission induction therapy and post-remission therapy. The purpose of both these two types of therapies is to kill leukemia cells that may not be active but could begin to re-grow. Treatment called central nervous system (CNS) sanctuary therapy is also given during each phase of the therapy. It has been observed that chemotherapy involves injection into a vein or use of mouth drugs, and they may not reach leukemia cells in the central nervous system, the cells are able to find sanctuary i.e. they hide in the CNS. Intrathecal chemotherapy and radiation therapy are able to reach leukemia cells in the CNS and are given to kill the leukemia cells and prevent the cancer from recurring again. Another name for CNS sanctuary therapy is also CNS prophylaxis. But all these methods lead to side effects, beyond the control of the therapeutic agents.
