Leukemia - Chronic Lymphocytic (CLL) Treatment

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is a cancer of lymphocytes (white blood cells). It causes a slow increase in white blood cells called 'B lymphocytes' and the cancerous cells spread from the blood marrow to the blood. CLL eventually causes the bone marrow to fail and can also affect the lymph nodes or other organs including the liver and spleen. The cause of CLL is unknown and this type of cancer mostly affects adults at the age of 65-70. In CLL, the abnormal cells surround other types of cells in the bone marrow, preventing the normal production of red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets. This results in anemic conditions in the people with CLL, which are more prone to get infections because they do not have enough white blood cells that fight bacteria and also there is excessive bleeding due to low level of blood platelets.

Symptoms of CLL include enlarged lymph nodes and liver, night sweats, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, bone pain, recurring of the infections and abnormal bruising. People with possible symptoms of CLL should immediately consult a doctor because only a doctor can diagnose and treat the problem. The concerned doctor will conduct tests to diagnose and assess CLL, which includes complete blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, CT scan of the chest and immunoglobulin testing.

No treatment is usually suggested for the early stage CLL. However, the patient must be closely monitored by the concerned doctor and treatment may be started if leukemia is growing rapidly, followed by other symptoms like loss in weght, fatigueness and coming back of the infections. Chemotherapy is the standard treatment offered to CLL patients who have symptoms of this disease and are also showing signs of rapid increase in the lymphocyte count in the blood. Chemotherapy is mainly recommended, to stop the progression of the disease and decrease the appearance of acute symptoms in the patient. Some chemotherapeutic agents may be frequently used in combination. Another mode of treatment of CLL is radiotherapy and high energy x-rays, which may relieve symptoms such as enlarged lymph nodes and liver. In some chronic cases of CLL, the spleen may be removed when it is enlarged and painful. These types of treatments lead to side effects and other health problems in the patient.
