Ovarian Cancer represents a group of different tumors that arise from different tissues present inside the ovary. The most common type of ovarian cancer arises from the 'epithelial cells' i.e. outside layer of cells on the surface of the ovary. Globally, ovarian cancer has been reported to be the 7th most common type of cancer in women and each year, the number of women diagnosed with this disease, are increasing. Also, it is the 5th leading cause of cancer deaths in women. It has been observed that majority of ovarian cancers are diagnosed late i.e. after the cancer has already spread in any part. Risk factors that increase the chance of developing ovarian cancer include a family history of cancer, age factor (50-55 years) and never being pregnant(throughout life). Symptoms of ovarian cancer include abdominal swelling, pelvic pain, indigestion, nausea, vaginal bleeding, urinary problems, fever, fatigueness, pain during intercourse and severe back pain. Other women may show symptoms that may vary and those women, who have these symptoms for a long time, should preferably consult a specialized doctor and most preferably a gynecologist. After the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, treatment depends on the stage of the disease, patient's age and spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

The primary treatment of ovarian cancer is surgery, in which time the cancer is removed from the ovary and other sites. Surgical treatment is best performed by a gynecologic oncologist who is specialized in the diagnosis and management of gynecologic malignancy. Chemotherapy is recommended after surgery and drugs are used to kill the cancer cells. The other form of treatment of ovarian cancer is radiation therapy and utilizes high energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. But, radiation therapy has side effects because some areas of the body also multiple rapidly and these include tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin irritation, oedema and irritation in the urinary bladder.
