MUSTHARISHATM – INGREDIENTS, INDICATIONS, USES AND BENEFITS

INTRODUCTION

Mustharishtam is an Ayurvedic formulation which is used in treating various digestive disorders by improving the digestive power. It stimulates the secretion of gastric juices and also removes the toxins from the liver. It is a well-known aam pachaka that prevents the formation of toxins and also digests the accumulated toxins.

BENEFITS OF INGREDIENTS

Main ingredient of this Ayurvedic formulation is musta.

  1. MUSTA (Cyperus rotundus ) – Musta is an Ayurvedic herb which is bitter in taste. Due to its carminative nature it is used to improve digestion. It acts as absorbent hence useful in treating diarrhoea.
  2. DHATAKI (Woodfordia fruticosa) – Dhatki is backbone herb of almost every Ayurvedic asavam and arishatam. The flowers of this herb are used to treat diarrhoea and dyspepsia.
  3. YAVANI (Trachyspermum ammi) – The seeds have carminative properties and used in treating diarrhoea, indigestion and bloating.
  4. MARICHA (Piper nigrum) – Maricha is a well-known Ayurvedic spice which is bitter in taste and beneficial in any kind of digestive problems like stomach upset, indigestion by improving Agni.
  5. VISWABHESHJA (Zingiber officinale) – Vishwabheshja as its name suggests vishwa (world) and bheshja (medicine), the universal medicine benefitting all diseases. It is pungent and helps in relaxing intestinal muscles.
  6. LAVANG (Syzygium aromaticum) – It has antioxidant properties and is rich in multiple nutrients. This spice is quite useful in treating nausea and indigestion.
  7. METHI (Trigonella foenum graecum) – The leaves of this plant are rich source of iron, magnesium and calcium. It soothes an upset stomach and indigestion. The leaves and seeds of this plant are highly beneficial in regulating blood glucose level in body.
  8. CHITARKMOOLA (Plumbago indica) – This is a potent herb that treats various skin ailments and digestive problems. Due to its katu (bitter taste) it helps to regulate digestion power and eliminates the accumulated toxins from the body.
  9. JEERAKA (Cuminum cyminum) – The seeds promotes digestion and removes toxins from body. Any digestion related problem can be potentially treated with the use of jeera seeds.
  10. GUDA (JAGGERY) – Jaggery is a healthy alternative of sugar and it aids digestion.

METHOD OF PREPARATION

All above mentioned ingredients are taken in the form of coarse powder and decoction is made by adding 52 litres of water, boil it until it reduced to 1/4. Then jaggery is added to this decoction. The herbs ajwayan, jeera, chitrak and maricha is taken in the form of coarse powder and mixed into the above decoction. All these ingredients are now transferred into a mud vessel and now dhatak pushpa and guda is added and mixed well. The mud vessel is sealed properly and kept undisturbed for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks liquid is filtered and it should be consumed after one year.

INDICATIONS

This Ayurvedic liquid formulation is used to treat indigestion, cholera and sprue.

BENEFITS OF MUSTHARISHTAM

  1. Loss of appetite – Mustarishtam stimulates the secretion of digestive juices and improves digestive power.
  2. Dysentery / Severe diarrhoea – Due to the presence of nagarmotha in this arishtam which has anti diarrhoeal action is used to treat diarrhoea and dysentery.
  3. Gastroenteritis – This Ayurvedic formulation is useful in gastroenteritis as it relieves flatulence and bloating.
  4. Malabsorption syndrome – Mustakarishta has digestive action and acts as Ama Pachak medicine. In malabsorption syndrome, AMA is commonly formed. Mustakarishta improves digestion and metabolism and increases the absorption of nutrients.
