About Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a dry and scaly skin disease. It is considered as a genetic disease and is caused by triggered immune system. Skin cells normally take about 21-28 days to replace themselves. But, in patients suffering from psoriasis, skin cells take around 2-6 days for their replacement. Psoriasis affects about 3% of global population and may develop in people between age group 11-45.
Causes of Psoriasis
1. Genetic Causes
Scientists have found about 9 gene mutations involved in causing psoriasis. One gene mutation on chromosome 6 (PSORS-1) is a major factor that leads to psoriasis. Due to mutations on genes, certain cells start functioning in a different way.
2. Immune System Causes
Normally, white blood cells produce antibodies to fight with invading foreign micro-organisms. Certain chemicals are produced that aid in healing and fighting infective organisms. In the case of psoriasis, T-cells (special while blood cells) become overactive and attack the skin. These T-cells make the skin cells multiply very fastly which start to stack up on the skin surface. In psoriasis, the skin completes this whole process in about 3-6 days. T-cells produce an abnormally large amount of chemicals which cause acute inflammation in the skin and joints.
3. Environmental Causes
Most environmental agents play an important role in causing psoriasis. According to researchers, at least 10% of the general population inherit one or more genes that aid to create a predisposition to psoriasis. A person who develops psoriasis must possess a combination of genes that cause psoriasis.
4. Stress
Stress may cause psoriasis or aggravate the existing psoriasis. Herbal treatment of stress may prevent occurrence of psoriasis in some people.
