Kidney Diseases And Their Management – Mantra Therapy & Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located toward the back on either side of the spine under the rib cage. The function of kidney disease is to filter the blood and drain out the toxins. The main and prime function of kidneys is the filtration of blood. The size of the kidney is approx 5 cm. Impaired kidneys lead to the building up of debris/toxins in the blood which may lead to raised toxin levels in the blood hence leading the body in trouble. Kidneys are also responsible for the Maintenance of minerals, salts and help to make the hormones for the functioning of the body.

Introduction

Kidney problem is a term that denotes multiple kidney issues like Chronic kidney disease, Kidney stones, Glomerulonephritis, Polycystic kidney disease, and Urinary tract infections. The most common form of kidney disease is chronic kidney disease. Kidney disease means kidneys are not working properly. Kidney disease is called chronic when kidney disease gets worse over time and the regular deprivation in glomerular filtration rate occurs. Progression of kidney disease leads to end-stage kidney diseases.

Kidney Disease

Causes

Following are the causes of Kidney diseases:-

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes type 1 and 2
  • Glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidney’s functional unit)
  • Interstitial nephritis (Inflammation of the kidney’s tubules)
  • Polycystic Kidney
  • Prolonged obstruction of the urinary tract
  • Prostate
  • Kidney stones
  • Cancers
  • Vesicoureteral (a condition that causes urine to back up into your kidneys)
  • Pyelonephritis (Recurrent kidney infection)

Symptoms

In the early stages of kidney disease, you usually don’t have noticeable symptoms. As the disease worsens, symptoms may include:-

  • Frequent urination
  • Low levels of energy and weakness
  • Poor appetite
  • Swelling on hands and feet/legs (Pedal edema)
  • Breathlessness
  • Bloody or foamy urine
  • Puffy eyes
  • Dryness
  • Itching
  • Concentration issues
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Numbness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • High blood pressure
  • Blackish skin

Diagnosis

Following diagnostic criteria can be done:-

  1. History taking is an important tool, Kidney patients sometimes have a family history of CKD or Polycystic kidney.
  2. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR)— GFR is the rate at which kidneys are filtering the blood. The normal results range from 90 to 120 mL/min/1.73 m2. Low GFR means kidneys are not filtering the blood properly hence creatinine or urea can be seen increased in renal function tests.
  3. Renal function test– Renal function test or kidney function tests tell the values of serum creatinine, urea and uric acid. Raised levels of creatinine may signify any underlying problem like CKD. Creatinine is a waste product and is derived from muscle metabolism. It is excreted in urine and expelled via the body. A high creatinine level in your blood means that your kidneys are not functioning well enough to get rid of it in your urine.
  4. Urine examination– A urine examination can signify the status of protein in the body.  This test check the presence of protein (albumin) and blood in your urine. A properly functioning kidneys test will not show any kind of protein and blood.
  5. Other tests may include imaging tests to look for problems with the size and structure of your kidneys such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and/or computerized tomography (CT) scans. GFR is the most reliable criteria to check the deprived status of kidneys.

Management

With some easy steps of management we can make kidneys better:-

  1. Limiting fluids or as guided by a physician
  2. Eating a low-protein diet
  3. Low sodium diet
  4. Low Potassium intake
  5. Cut down the excessive phosphorus intake

The Ayurvedic Aspect Of Kidney Diseases

The kidney disease can be correlated with Vrikdosha. The poor lifestyle and deposition of toxins lead to the vitiation of doshas. The aggravated Vata dosha may lead to blockage of strotas (channels) with vitiated Kapha. The poor status of pitta may lead to poor digestion. It is evident that chronic digestive issues may lead to poor kidney and liver health. Simply it is due to ama dosha (toxins). The Vata dosha itself if aggravated leads to obstruction of channels and pain.

Ayurveda is playing a significant role to make kidney status better. The herbs like Varun (Crataeva nurvala), Bhumi Amalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Kaasni (Cichorium intybus), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Shirish (Albizia lebbeck), Apamarg (Achyranthes aspera) and Shigru (Moringa oleifera) are mentioned in the texts which help to make the status of kidneys better.
