Interviewer: How are you?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes I am good, thank you

Interviewer: Thank you for sparing some time from your busy schedule for us. Today we want to know about Ashwagandha. So Dr. Vikram please tell us how it is useful for normal person in today’s life?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ashwagandha as name says, it’s a very popular plant in Ayurvedic medicines. Very famous and very useful. And also very famous in India and worldwide. All the Ayurvedic physician use it in almost on all of their patient. Ashwagandha as name suggest is made of the Ashwa and gandha, the plant it smells like horse body, horse urine the smell of a horse. Gandha means smell or smell of horse. Ashwa means horse.

Interviewer: So it just smells like horse.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: It smells like, the root of this plant smells like horse. Many people they say it gives power of horse. That’s why it name as Ashwagandha. But actually you can say it’s the fact also its useful in stamina promoting and its used in endurance, male sexual health medicine also.

Interviewer: What is Adaptogen?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Adaptogen as I was telling you is a substance which fights the stress neutralizes the stress. So it is best anti-stress herb. Root extract is very useful. And I tell you something about this plant it is a wonderful plant. It goes up to the height of 5 feet. Root powder as I told you, root is used medically. These are the flowers and the roots. You see if I open this it is a plant of solanaceae family. And they become reddish when matured. If you open up the fruit it is full of seeds. Like it is characteristic of Solanaceae family. So like brinjal, ladyfinger, this is ashwagandha but the fruits are not used in the medicines some people use leaves powder but mainly the root powder is useful only, and we make the extract, I prefer root extract standardized extract which is very powerful and very useful. And so many uses. Now lot of researches have done on the active ingredients from the root. The Alkaloids, major alkaloids are withanolides. Withaferins these are the active ingredients or active chemicals found in this plants. There is other plant I want to show you also.

Interviewer: So it’s commonly available.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes it is commonly available. It doesn’t grow too high. It is a shrub 5 to 6 feet. As I was telling you Withanolides and Withaferin A are very use full in cancer treatment and in arthritis treatment. analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, Adaptogenic antistress. so many diseases it is useful. Arthritis it is useful, asthma it is useful, when there is nerve pain trigeminal is there, insomnia is there, restlessness is there, lack of sleep is there, and anxiety and stress is there. Someone have trigeminal neuralgia, some headache is there.

Interviewer: So it have so many benefits.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Even in males it can be used in premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction. Low sperm count, lack of libido also.in muscle building, body building. In females it increases the bone density. Mainly in women after menopause the bone density decreases. Let me show you the other plant. This is another plant this is very beautiful plant. Now a day’s its winter, in summer times these fruits will become reddish in color. You have seen red fruits. But fruits are not used in the medicine. Just for identification purpose. Some people they use leaves also for weight loss. Some anti-cancer substances are also found in the leaves that is called Withaferin A as I explained you. Withaferin A we are using for anti-cancerous purposes.

Interviewer: So Dr. Vikram as we know you have written a thesis. Your main thesis herb was Ashwagandha and Bala. So in that u have explained it’s useful in diabetic neuropathy.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes I have wrote my thesis on uses of ashwagandha especially in diabetes. Actually in diabetes there is a myopathy mainly. My thesis was on result of ashwagandha on myopathy. Muscle loss, in diabetes there is lot of muscle loss wasting. It decreases the strength there is lots of neuropathy is also there.so it also helps in neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy and this myopathy. When there is muscle loss, lack of stamina, lack of energy, fatigue is also there. it is a non-steroidal stimulant, I would say it doesn’t contain any artificial steroids. It has natural steroids which are causing no side effects so that is very wonderful. It is a wonderful medicine can be taken by anybody.

Interviewer: To conclude this talk we just want to ask, you said ashwagandha extract is better. so how much quantity should be consumed?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Normally I gave 1-2 capsules/2 times a day 500 mg of capsules and if you take the powder form then dosage should be higher.3-6 Gms or 1 tsp. full in the morning and in the evening. But it’s little bitter. If you ask me Ayurvedic properties of bitter I want to tell you some Ayurvedic properties also.

Interviewer: Please tell.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: It is mainly bitter and astringent and the potency or virya is hot. And vipaka after digestion metabolic activity it is sweet. These are the Ayurvedic principals. Basic characteristic’s of this.

Interviewer: so there are many products of planet Ayurveda which contain herb ashwagandha. So other products like Atirasadi and male support formula and in Atirasadi it’s in powder form.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: I have told you this can be used in so many diseases. Atirasadi we used in male stamina. We have used the root powder. For stress support we are using an extract of root of ashwagandha. So we have stress support product. so that is also a very good for stress.

Interviewer: So you prefer that ashwagandha can be used by normal day to day activity?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes every body can use. Because stress is there insomnia, memory, lack of sleep, in sleep products ashwagandha is good. So ashwagandha is useful for everybody.
