Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is not caused by any single reason, but several factors are there which increases the chances of developing this disease. These factors include advancing age, obesity, overweight, family history of osteoarthritis and history of joint injury.

Effect of Weight on Osteoarthritis

Healthy weight, in general, helps to maintain the overall health of the body. Osteoarthritis can be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight. If you are overweight, then losing weight can help prevent osteoarthritis of hips, knees and spine because losing weight reduces the stress on these weight bearing joints of our body.

Effect of Exercise on Osteoarthritis

Exercise is must for a healthy body. Exercise helps to improve our mood and helps to relieve from stress. In case of osteoarthritis, exercise improves movements of the joints. It helps to strengthen the muscles that surround the joints. Exercises such as swimming and walking on flat surface are recommended for osteoarthritis patients, as these exercises are less stressful for our joints. An exercise like jogging and high impact aerobics should be avoided as these exercises increases joint pain. In short, the exercises which strengthen the muscles that surrounds the joints, reduces the pain in osteoarthritis patients and hence recommended for them.

Who can Get Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis can occur at any age, but mostly affects middle aged and older people. Women are at higher risk of developing this disease than men. In general, the risk of this disease increases with age.

Osteoarthritis and Ayurveda

Osteoarthritis is known as “Sandhivata”, in Ayurveda. “Sandhi” means the joint. According to Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is known to be caused by the vitiation of Vata dosha. Vata dosha is one of the tridoshas of the body which symbolizes wind or air and governs all the movements of the body. As vata is dry in nature, it usually absorbs the fluid from any part of our body and hence causes destruction of the cartilages by reducing the fluid (synovial fluid) inside the joint.

Vata dosha may get imbalanced by consumption of cold, stale and dry food, poor sleeping habits and exposure to severe dry and cold weather. Degeneration of cartilages which occurs due to aging, strain on the joint, injury to the joint are some of the frequent causes of osteoarthritis.
