Best Ayurvedic Tips by Dr. Vikram Chauhan (MD-Ayurveda)
Interviewer: Good Morning Dr. Vikram Chauhan
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Good Morning!!
Interviewer: There are many patients who have kidney related problems, one are those who are in the initial stage and others who are undergoing dialysis. Both these stages are not properly managed by allopathic treatment. Is there any treatment available for these patients in Ayurveda?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ayurveda has a lot to offer to the patient with kidney related ailments. Basically, kidney problems, mostly occur in patients having prolonged diabetes, hypertension. These are the two major reasons of kidney failure. There are other reasons, but they are very less found and affect 10 % of the population.
So patients with high creatinine levels should keep in control sugar levels and also hypertension too. Usually, these sugar and BP levels are kept in control so as creatinine levels to remain in control. But in some cases, it keeps on increasing. But when creatinine levels increase to 9 or 10 and blood urea level reaches to 200 or 250 then there is a need for dialysis.
There are some Ayurvedic medicines which can control creatinine and urea levels, even I have seen in chronic patients with CKD 4, CKD 5 that creatinine levels become stable or start reversing.
Interviewer: Are kidney failure can be managed with herbs?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes, it can be managed and dialysis should be avoided.
Interviewer: Which herbs you prescribe for this condition?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: There are many herbs which I recommend. Some in combination. Like Punarnava called bohervia diffusa, plant is creeper in nature and widely used by people who have its knowledge around the world. Then, there is Phyllanthus I use. Kasni too, which is Cichorium intybus. I use its leaves not the root or seed. Roots and seeds of this herb mainly used by most of the doctors in ayurveda but I recommend using the leaves. Gokshur which is Tribulus terrestris is very good. I use pine bark formula in tablets and are very good in kidney failure and reduces the creatinine levels. And I use Punarnava, Gokshura, Kasni, pine bark, and also use Indian Echinacea it is called KALMEGH. I use it in capsule form 2 twice daily. There is also one wonderful herb called rivandchinni and in Latin it is called Rheum emodi. I use it in powder form in ½ tsp. in morning and evening. The patient had to take care of underlying conditions such as Diabetes and HTN which is very important.
Also, excessive protein consumption should be avoided, and I don’t recommend it because their metabolism leads to increased creatinine and urea levels. If hemoglobin gets low allopathic doctors recommend erythropoietin injection that can be given, but I have recently seen it increases creatinine levels. So try to consume natural foods that are rich in iron. Deep breathing exercises are also very important.
Interviewer: One more major problem associated with such patents is nausea, vomiting and itching problem. So either any remedy for it?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: When urea and creatinine levels increase in blood they cause nausea vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, lethargy and fullness and itching in body. So all those medicines I recommended previously like Echinacea, Phyllanthus Niruri, Rencure Formula, Mutrakrichanatak Churna. This Churna is classical Ayurvedic formulation which is combination of about 8-10 herbs and is very good in getting rid of all these symptoms and also reducing urea and creatinine levels. There are also some simple home remedies, like people can take one spoonful of each fennel, cumin and thyme which is jeera, souf and ajwain in Hindi. Take them in 400 ml water and reduce it by boiling to 50 ml then strain it and drink it. Make it fresh every time.so this will help in controlling nausea vomiting feeling and even itching too.
Interviewer: What about food which can be taken by diabetic patients?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: There is tapioca which is called sabudana in Hindi. So its pudding or kheer prepare from it is very healthy as it is free from potassium and is very energetic in Nature.
Interviewer: How long it takes to cure and how long they can take these herbs?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: These herbs are very safe in nature and free from any chemical. They can be used by allopathic treatment and can be taken lifelong soon as the kidney functions restored, which depends upon people to people differently and depends upon nature i.e. Prakriti of a person. So time to restore natural function will be different in all people, it will be 6 months in one and may take 2 yrs in another which depends upon the stage and condition of the person. But the entire patient tells me that they feel better and they respond to this treatment. Results are very good and s.creatinine levels decreasing in every patient. All patients are satisfied with this treatment.
Interviewer: Basically, you are saying that one can avoid dialysis and take these herbs to control creatinine levels.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: I am saying that one can avoid dialysis if s. creatinine levels are not so high and if they have reached some optimum levels and dialysis is required then one should go for it. If someone is undergoing dialysis, they can still have these herbs. When the creatinine levels will get normal, then he can stop dialysis. There are patient in my practices who were on dialysis and now free from dialysis.
Interviewer: Patients are worried about heavy metal used in Ayurveda. So, please explain?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: It is a common question they ask, if I am going to use heavy metals in my practice then obviously they are going to fail. It is very important that heavy metals should not be administered to any kidney patient, especially, the impure and not properly purified metals. In my practice, I use pure organic herbs and they are tested for heavy metals and for microbes, Yeasts and etc. We are exporting to different countries. So its pure herbs that I am using and heavy metals are going to destroy the kidney.
