About Kidney Transplant
Kidney transplant is usually advised to the people who have a highly compromised kidney function and abnormally raised urea and creatinine levels which are not manageable by medication.
Need for Kidney Transplant
There are many factors which affect a person’s kidney causing severe kidney failure which is also known as end stage renal disease. End stage renal disease results from acute or chronic kidney failure or congenital problems like poly cystic kidney disease. Severe trauma to the kidneys can also be a factor in which a kidney transplant becomes absolutely essential.
Is Kidney Transplant Necessary for Patients of Chronic Kidney Disease?
For patients of chronic kidney disease, the need for a kidney transplant is not immediate in the initial stages of the disease.
But, if the patient is having persistently raised urea and creatinine levels which are not manageable without dialysis, the only option is to go for a kidney transplant.
End Stage Renal Disease and Kidney Transplant
End stage renal disease is a condition in which the kidney function is severely hampered and is not manageable on medications or diet control. Stage -5 chronic kidney disease can be compared to end stage renal disease.
Almost all patients of end stage renal disease need a kidney transplant as soon as possible. They are otherwise managed only on dialysis.
Can Kidney Transplant Be Avoided?
Kidney transplant can be avoided only in the early stages of kidney failure. There are many patients who are accidentally diagnosed with the condition, which means that they are not having any significant symptoms that require immediate management.
Similarly, there are patients of initial stage – 1, 2, 3 of Chronic kidney disease who are able to manage their kidney failure by following an appropriate diet schedule and taking proper dietary supplements that helps them to stay fit.
In such cases, kidney transplant can be avoided until the kidney function is so compromised that no dietary or medical treatment is able to control it.

General Guidelines
1. Water Intake
It is important to maintain an adequate water intake in kidney failure patients despite the fact that the patient has a reduced urine output.
Water helps to flush out the toxins accumulating as a result of the electrolyte imbalance and a mal – functioning kidney.
The demand for water varies for patients who are on dialysis to the ones who are not taking dialysis. A personalized diet chart can help in deciding the right amount of water required per day which should also include the total quantity of fluid consumed by the person each day to avoid any discomfort.
2. Potassium
Potassium is one of the electrolytes that is raised in a large number of kidney patients. Raised potassium levels in blood can be very harmful as it causes hyperkalemia which can cause irregular heart function also known as cardiac arrhythmias. Other non –specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting etc.
Patients who are on dialysis can take some amounts of potassium as its excess level is being washed out through dialysis. In others, all foods which have high potassium content should be avoided.
3. Protein Intake
Patients of kidney failure lose proteins in urine in cases like that of nephrotic syndrome.
In such cases, the patient has to be very careful while choosing the right kind of proteins that will fulfill his body’s demands and will not cause raised urea levels in blood.
4. Non-Vegetarian Food
Patients of kidney failure should avoid taking meat in all forms. They can however go for other protein sources which include egg whites, green gram and pink lentils.
5. Dairy Products
Patients of kidney failure are advised to consume low fat dairy products, especially in the early stages of the condition.
This is because milk products are rich in many minerals which may lead to electrolyte imbalance in them.
6. Exercise and Physical fitness
Patients of kidney failure should do some form of light exercise to strengthen their muscle mass.
Since, the patients generally become very shriveled and lose a lot of weight, it is also advised to go for simple and light forms of exercises such as walking, breathing exercises, yoga etc.
Patients who can tolerate a more rigorous fitness routine should not shy away from it. It is however, best to do all your physical activity under the guidance of a physical trainer or your regular doctor.
