About Edema
In Ayurveda, edema is known as Sotha roga. Edema is also known as dropsy. Edema is observable swelling from fluid accumulation in body tissues. Edema most commonly occurs in the feet and legs, where it is referred to as peripheral edema. The swelling is the result of the accumulation of excess fluid under the skin in the spaces within the tissues. Generally, oedema is classified as localised or generalised. Further, it can be classified as pitting or non-pitting. Cardiac oedema is an accumulation of serum fluid from blood plasma in the interstitial tissues as a result of congestive heart failure. In severe cases, the fluid may also accumulate in serous cavities.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the oldest medical science or healthcare system. Ayurveda literally means ‘the science of life’. Ayurveda is also called as Indian system of medicine. Ayurveda teaches us in a comprehensive way that what is harmful, and what is useful to the human body. Ayurvedic system of medicine addresses the happy and unhappy states of the human life. Ayurveda speaks about preventive as well as curative aspects of the diseases.
The Five Element Theory
Ayurvedic system of medicine is based on peculiar fundamental principles like and Panchmahabhuta (five elements ether, air, fire, water and earth) theory and Tridosha (three humors vata, pitta and kapha) theory. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the five elements (Panchmahabhuta) include space, air, fire, water and earth. The five elements are building blocks of human life. The five elements have a significant role in Human Anatomy and Human Physiology.
Cause of Diseases as Per Ayurveda
Just like the five element theory, Tridosha theory has been the mainstay of the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Tridosha means three biological humours that are the primary life-forces in the human body. Vata is product of interaction of air and ether. Pitta is product of interaction of fire and water. Kapha is product of interaction of earth and water.
The three biological humours remain in dynamic equilibrium with each other and this harmony represents health. Imbalance in function of three biological humours is a disease. With Ayurvedic medicines, either derived out of herbs or minerals, one can enhance the opposing elements in order to achieve equilibrium among three biological humours.
