Ayurvedic Treatment of Dropsy (Oedema)

Dropsy (Oedema)

About Dropsy

Dropsy, also known as Oedema, is a condition which is characterized by swelling in the body parts due to the accumulation of fluid in the body tissues. This condition most commonly occurs in the feet and the legs, and known as peripheral oedema. The exact cause of edema in women is not known. The edema in diseases of the liver, heart and the kidneys occurs mainly due to salt retention while in some liver and kidney diseases, fluid retention occurs due to the low levels of albumin in the blood.

In general, the most common systemic diseases that are responsible for this condition include heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and Nephrotic syndrome. Accumulation of fluids in the lungs leads to the pulmonary oedema while the excess fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity is known as ascites. Deep vein thrombosis causes edema in the legs.

Healthy diet for dropsy

There are many different causes of the dropsy or edema. Although numerous strategies are available to treat this condition but if we are talking about diet, then reducing the amount of sodium in your diet, can often help to manage this condition. Because sodium holds on to the fluid in the body, hence the more consumption of sodium results in more fluid retention. Along with this reduction of sodium, you can increase the intake of potassium by taking potassium rich foods. Potassium rich foods help increase the amount of sodium out through urine.

Foods like processed meats, frozen dinners, packed rice, chips and mixed noodles are rich in sodium and hence should be avoided as much as possible. Cheese, breakfast breads and cereals may also be responsible for the increased sodium levels and hence should be taken in limited amount.

Ayurvedic treatment for dropsy

Ayurveda is a 4000 year old Indian method of healing. It is one of an ancient system of medicine that includes diet, natural therapies and herbs for treating any health problem.

Ayurvedic treatment gives the equal importance to mind, body and spirit and hence improves the overall health of the body. According to Ayurveda, there are three doshas, known as tridoshas, and they are considered as the energies of the body. The tridoshas include Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. Any imbalance in any of these tridoshas results in one or the other health problem. Herbal remedies improve the flow of blood through the veins.

No doubt, diuretics can offer temporary relief to the sufferers but Ayurvedic treatment provides the permanent solution to any health problem. Herbal remedy has no side effects and hence these are considered safe even when taken for a long time.
