About Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which fits or attacks of unconsciousness occur with or without convulsions. It is one of the serious disorder of central nervous system that occurs in both children and adults as well. Epilepsy is also known as falling sickness.
Types of Epilepsy
There are Four Types of Epilepsy Which are Explained Below:
1. Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy
This type of epilepsy tends to appear during childhood or adolescence. Person suffering from this type of epilepsy has normal intelligence. Results of MRI and neurological exam are usually normal for this type of epilepsy, but the results of EEG may show epileptic discharges.
2. Idiopathic Partial Epilepsy
This type of epilepsy is also known as benign focal epilepsy of childhood (BFEC) as it begins in childhood. It is considered one of the mildest type and may be a part of family history. It is never diagnosed in adults.
3. Symptomatic Generalized Epilepsy
It is caused by brain damage. Besides seizures, patients with this type of epilepsy have some other neurological problems also, such as cerebral palsy or mental retardation.
4. Symptomatic Partial Epilepsy
It is the most common type of epilepsy. It begins in childhood and occur frequently in children. Abnormality of the brain due to strokes, tumors, scarring or sclerosis of brain tissue, congenital brain abnormality, trauma, and infections is one of the main causes of this type of epilepsy.
Features of Epilepsy

- Convulsions
- Teeth biting
- Constrictions of the fingers
- Retraction of head to one side
- Black or red Discoloration of surface of the body
- Involuntary speech
- Roughness of the body
Epilepsy in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, epilepsy is known as “Apasmara” and epileptic attacks are known as “Akshepaka”. In Ayurveda, epilepsy are of four types:
- The epilepsy which results due to aggravation of Vata dosha is known as “Vataja epilepsy”.
- The epilepsy which results due to aggravation of Kapha dosha is known as “Kaphaja epilepsy”.
- The epilepsy which results due to aggravation of Pitta dosha is known as “Pittaja epilepsy”.
- The epilepsy which results due to aggravation of all the three doshas is known as “Sannipataja epilepsy”.
How Can We Manage Seizures?
The Seizures can be Managed by Following ways:
- By taking healthy and balanced diet
- By taking proper rest.
- By managing stress.
- By avoiding drugs and alcohol.
- By skipping TV and computer time whenever possible.
- By maintaining regular sleeping schedule.
Diet for Epilepsy Patients
The Ketogenic diet is good for patients suffering from epilepsy. Ketogenic diet is a special diet which contains high fat and low carbohydrate in it. This diet helps to control seizures in some people with epilepsy. This diet may not be suitable for every patient, but this diet is considered usually when two or more suitable medications have been tried and not worked. In general, our body uses glucose from the foods we eat for its energy purpose, but in ketogenic diet, the body uses ketones instead of glucose.
