About Headache

Headache is a pain anywhere in the region of the head or the neck. It may occur due to many conditions which may involve grave pathologies related to the brain to something as simple and common as insufficient sleep.

Headache is a big classification which has been designed according to its characteristics, causative factors and other factors.

Why Does the Head Ache?

Brain tissues are themselves insensitive to pain as they do not have receptors to sense pain. Pain occurs due to the disturbance in the pain sensitive areas around the brain. These include eyes, ears, sinuses, mucous membranes, arteries, veins, nerves, muscles and subcutaneous tissues.

Types of Headache

There are more than 200 different types of headache classifications. Clinical examination and other laboratory investigations determine the severity and the possible line of treatment for any kind of pain in head.

Incidence of Headache

Approximately 70 % of people experience headache at some point of time in their life. Most of the cases reported are not dangerous and only 1 -5 % of people develop headache which is so severe that it may lead to an emergency.

What are Primary and Secondary Headaches?

Primary Headaches

Primary headaches do not have a serious underlying cause and do not cause any risk to health in the long run. What they do affect is the daily routine as they tend to recur and are sometimes very painful, for example, Migraine.

Primary headaches usually set off at the age of 20 – 40 years. Migraines and tension headaches are two types of common primary headaches.

Other types of primary headaches include cluster headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, hemicranias continua, primary sex headache, hypnic headache, cough headache, stabbing headache etc.

90% of all headaches are primary headaches.

Secondary Headaches

Secondary headaches occur due to a pathology located deep in the brain tissues or anywhere else in the body. It includes conditions like brain tumors, infections, head injuries, vascular infections etc.

Common infections like meningitis, subarachnoid hemorrhage etc. are types of secondary headaches.

Diagnosing Headaches

Headaches can be simply diagnosed on the basis of the clinical signs and symptoms from one another. A thorough physical examination of the patient and detailed medical history can conclude the type of headache that the patient is suffering from.

Another aspect that should not be ignored is to know how old the headache is? A chronic headache may at times present as a new headache which may be the first sign of an old headache turning into a syndrome like Migraine.

How are “Red Flags” Related to Headaches?

Red flags is a criteria which includes a set of symptoms related to headache which determine the severity of the condition and its possible effects on health.

These red flag symptoms help to determine whether further investigations would be required or not.

How Long does a Migraine Headache Last?

Migraine headache lasts from 4 hours to up to 72 hours. They may occur several times a week to only once a year.

Migraine headaches are a result of the problems associated with the nerves and blood vessels of the head region.
