Incidence of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
As men age, the chance of BPH or prostate enlargement increases many fold. 25 % of all men have some degree of prostatic enlargement as they reach their 50’s. Cause of Prostate Enlargement and Treatment By Modern Drugs
The cause of enlarged prostate is mainly accumulation to di-hydrotestosterone in the prostate which triggers growth of the cells.
An enzyme 5 alpha reductatase converts testosterone into Di-hydrotestosterone within cells. There are medicines which are given to block this enzyme. There are other drugs like Finasteride, episteride used in modern medicine to help symptomatically.

Prostate Cancer
As mentioned above, 90 % of the men, about the age of 80 will suffer from enlarged prostate. (25 % in their 50’s) but prostate cancer does not affect all. Only 10 % of the patients have chances of conversion of BPH into Prostate Cancer. The most common cancer affecting the prostate is Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate.
There is a test called PSA levels exam which helps to determine whether the Enlarged Prostate gland is going to become cancerous. PSA levels of < 4ng/ ml have probability of Cancer at about 10 %. If the PSA levels are more than 10 ng/ ml, the probability increases to more than 50 %.
So regular monitoring of PSA levels is must in case of enlarged prostate gland.
