Introduction

Knee pain is a common complaint for many people globally. Several factors that can cause knee pain includes injury, degeneration, arthritis and infection. Swelling and inflammation of the knee is common with different knee problems. The most common knee pain is due to osteoarthritis and swelling occurs without the presence of any injury. Less common knee pain have been reported due to gout and inflammatory arthritis. It has been observed that mobility of the knee can be affected by number of conditions. Chronic and limited mobility of the knee is also due to arthritis.

The severity of knee pain may vary and most common symptoms include swelling, stiffness, inflammation, redness and instability. In some cases, there is ‘locking’ and even inability to fully straighten the knee. In some cases, knee pain respond to a combination of non-invasive treatments such as applying heat or cold and medications that improve pain and inflammation.

Causes of Knee Pain

Bone chips – In some persons, a knee injury can break off fragments from the bone known as cartilage. These pieces may get stuck in the joint and cause knee pain and swelling.

Bursitis – Bursa is a sac of fluid and present in different parts of the knee. More often or repeated bending can irritate the bursa, thus causing knee pain and swelling.

Iliotibial band syndrome – Iliotibial band is a piece of tough tissue running from the hip region and down to the shin. If it is irritated by some problem, it gets swollen and causes knee pain on the outer side.

Medial plica syndrome – Plica is a fold of tissue in the knee joint and on account of its irritation, swelling and knee pain can occur.

Osteoarthritis – This problem is the frequent cause of knee pain in athletes and other people.

Partially dislocated kneecap – Here, the kneecap slides out of position and causes knee pain and swelling. It is more common in girls than boys.

Tendonitis – Tendons connect the bones and the muscles. Sometimes, tendons become inflamed and cause knee pain or ‘knee tendonitis’.

The severity of knee pain may vary from person to person. It more depends on the cause and the situation. Knee pain can be caused by a minor sprain or contusion which may disappear with home treatments such as rest, elevation of the leg and medications. Most knee pain is treated with the aid of allopathic drugs, but these mostly lead to side effects. There are some cases of severe knee pain situations in which surgery is recommended. Athletes mostly require surgery due to torn ligaments in the center of the knee or fracture. Patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis may need knee replacement surgery. However, surgery is optional and only the last resort.
