About Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a yellowish waxy fat like substance which is found in all the cells of our body. Our body needs cholesterol to make hormones and the substances which in turn helps to digest the food. Cholesterol travels through our bloodstream in small packages which are called as lipoproteins. These packages are made up of lipid (fat) on the inside and proteins from the outside.
Types of Cholesterol
There are two types of lipoproteins which carry cholesterol throughout our body:
1. Low Density Lipoproteins
Low density lipoprotein cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol. A high level of LDL cholesterol leads to build up of cholesterol in our arteries.
2. High Density Lipoproteins
High density lipoprotein cholesterol is known as good cholesterol. This type of cholesterol carries cholesterol from other parts of the body to the liver and our liver removes the cholesterol from our body.
High Blood Cholesterol
If you have too much cholesterol in your blood then you are suffering from high blood cholesterol levels. This condition itself, generally has no signs or symptoms and hence, generally many people don’t know that they are suffering from high blood cholesterol levels. Person with high blood cholesterol level is at high risk of developing coronary heart disease which is also known as coronary artery disease.
More the LDL cholesterol levels in our body, more is the chance of getting heart disease. Higher the HDL cholesterol levels in our body, lesser is the chance of developing heart disease.
What is Coronary Heart Disease?
It is a disease which occurs due to building up of plaque inside the coronary arteries. Over the time, this plaque hardens and narrows our arteries. This in turn, limits the oxygen rich blood flow to the heart. If this flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart is blocked, heart attack may occur.
Heart attack is a condition which causes chest pain which in turn causes discomfort. Person may feel like pressure or squeezing in their chest. The pain may occur in their shoulders, neck, jaw, arms or back. Heart attack pain may be like indigestion sometimes.
Factors That Give Rise to High Blood Cholesterol Levels
There are many factors that give rise to Hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol levels)

Eating foods which contain unsaturated fat instead of saturated fat can helps to reduce the cholesterol levels in the blood. Foods that are rich in unsaturated fats include oily fish, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin) and vegetable oils (sunflower, olive oil).
Regular Exercise is not only good to maintain healthy cholesterol levels but also essential for overall health of the body. Regular exercise helps to stay fit.
