Commonly Known As: Kasni
In Sanskrit It Is Known As: Kasani
English Names: Endive, Chicory
It is popularly known as “syrup of wild cherries” in European countries. It is a very popular herb in Unani system of medicine and in Arabic it is known by the name of-Hindba. In olden times, Kasni was relished by Egyptians as part of their regular diet because it supports healthy circulatory system and maintains the Liver.
Occurrence and Physical Charecteristics of Chicory
It is an herb widely grown in INDIA but it is very popular in many other European countries also.
It is a perennial, erect bush growing up to a height of 1-3 ft. It is widely cultivated for serving as animal feed.
Flowers: It can be easily recognized by its beautiful bluish-purple colored flowers. The flowers open only in daylight, opening at around 6’o clock and closing before the sun sets every day.
Leaves: The leaves are rounded or spherical and have a bitter taste
Fruits: Angular and light colored.
Roots: The roots are fleshy and have a brownish color from outside but whitish on the inside and resemble a cow’s tail.
Guna (Specific Quality): Laghu (Light), Ruksha (Dry)
Rasa (Taste): Tikta (Bitter)
Vipaka (After Taste): Katu (Pungent)
Virya (Potency): Ushna (Hot)
Effect on Tridosha: Vitiates kapha and pitta doshas
Hence, it can be used in all the diseases that may occur a result of Kapha and Pitta imbalance.

Dosage
Juice or decoction-10-20 ml.
Root powder-3-6 gm.
Seed powder-3-6 gm.
