Amrutottara Kashayam

Reference: Sahasra Yoga Kashaya Prakarana 30, Chikitsa manjari.

Amrutottara kashayam is a polyherbal ayurvedic medicine. It is available in the liquid form. It is broadly used for the treatment of all types of fever, constipation and digestive complications.

Ingredients

  • Ginger – Zingiber officinalis – 2 parts
  • Amruta – Giloya – Tinospora cordifolia – 6 parts
  • Haritaki – Terminalia chebula – 4 parts

Method of Preparation

All the above mentioned ingredients are added with 8 parts of water. It is boiled until reduced to quarter part to make the amrutottara kashayam.

Medicinal Properties

Amrutottara kashayam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine available in liquid form. This medicine is primarily used to manage the fever. Herbs used in the formulation of this medicine are loaded with the immunity enhancing properties. It helps to improve the digestion strength and appetite. It is beneficial medicine for digestive problems like flatulence, bloating, heartburn, indigestion, acidity, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting etc. Use of this medicine is quite effective in edema as it helps to expel out the extra fluid from body. Hence detoxification and blood purification properties of Amrutottara kashayam are quite helpful to eliminate the toxins from body. Laxative action of this medicine helps in easy passing of stools and also improves the bowel movements. This medicine acts well for liver diseases like jaundice and fatty liver as it helps to eliminate the toxins from liver via rejuvenating properties.

Dosage

Take 12 – 24 ml, before food, at about 6 am and 6pm or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

It is usually advised to add equal amount of water to the kashayam (herbal decoction).

Side Effects

There are no known side effects of using this medicine.

Over dosage with this medicine may cause mild heart burn, stomach irritation and diarrhea.
