आहारशयनाब्रह्मचर्यैर्युक्त्या प्रयोजितैः।
शरीरं धार्यते नित्यमागारमिव धारणैः।।
Reference – Ashtanghridyam, Annarakshadhyay, Shloka No. 52
Meaning: There are three main pillars of the body: 1. Aahar (Diet), 2. Shayan / Nidra (Sleep), and 3. Brahmacharya (the way of Brahman). As per the classical instructions, given in the ancient literatures, utilizing and practicing these all appropriately ensures the body formation similarly as a pillar ensures the stability of a house.
निद्रायत्तं सुखं दु:खं पुष्टि: कार्श्यं बलाबलम्।
वृषता क्लीबता ज्ञानमज्ञानं जीवितं न च।।
Reference – Ashtanghridyam, Annarakshadhyay, Shloka No. 53
Meaning: Sleep means relaxing your body. Getting a sound sleep helps us to have happiness, affirmation, strength, growth, power of copulation, knowledge and the profit of long healthy life. Opposite to that, improper sleep results in the arrival of grief, weakness, impotency, debility, and illiteracy.
अकाले अतिप्रसङ्गाच्च न च निद्रा निषेविता।
सुखायुषी पराकुर्यात् कालरात्रिरिवापारा।।
Reference – Ashtanghridyam, Annarakshadhyay, Shloka No. 54
Meaning: Misuse or lack of sleep, sleeping at wrong time, sleeping more than necessary or sleeping a little bit destroys the pleasures of life and reduces the lifespan as well. This type of irregular sleep is similar to devastation.
रात्रौ जागरणं रूक्षं, स्निग्धं प्रस्वपनं दिवा
अरूक्षमनभिष्यन्दि त्वासीनप्रचलायितम्।
Reference – Ashtanghridyam, Annarakshadhyay, Shloka No. 55
Meaning: Waking at night causes the body to get sick and increases Vata Dosha. Sleeping in the day increases the Kapha Dosha. There is another way to sleep – sleeping in a sitting position or taking naps. It neither irritates nor increases phlegm. “Charaka” has called this state of sleep as ‘sedentary’.
