Harpreet Kaur, the name means a lot, Har stands for all & Preet means love, Harpreet means she is loved by all. By profession she is an Air hostess and she has to keep smiling all the time, no matter how grim the situation becomes. She is 30 years old young lady who is a native of Gurugram. She used to do her job perfectly and was quite popular among her colleagues and she was a perfect host in international flights.

Her problem of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) began in the month of June 2018, when she felt that she had upset stomach. She began thinking about the food that she had consumed, but it was her routine diet and nothing extra ordinary. Even her appetite was losing its regular momentum and she didn’t feel like eating anything. She thought it might be something as she used to feel the mucus coming out, very rarely and occasionally, with her stools and she completely ignored it. It might be due to that or something else. She asked her colleagues what to do. One of her colleagues told her to take rest in the crew’s room and asked her if she needed something. She lied curled up with her hands placed on her stomach and even couldn’t go to sleep because of this turmoil in her stomach. She asked her friend to bring curd and a few bananas, she later peeled them off and cut them in pieces and consumed them. But even that could not provide her any relief and she continued to suffer for 2 consecutive days.

The moment the plane landed at John F. Kennedy New York airport she never rushed to any local doctor, but did the treatment herself with the help of her colleagues and the first aid box present in the plane, as medical costs are too high in the USA. She boarded the first flight coming to India and reached Indira Gandhi International airport and headed straight to home. On seeing her face even her mother could sense something wrong. She curiously asked, “Look at your face, what happened? What’s wrong with you?” She looked pale and narrated the whole story to her mom and both reached a local hospital and she was admitted there and then. The hospital staff did all her blood tests and ultrasonography, but nothing abnormal was noticed, but still prescribed some medicines and she did buy them and took them as prescribed. Glucose was transfused and her hands swelled a little bit, but she trusted the doctor.

She felt a little relief from those medicines, but it was the lull before the storm. The doctors did refer giving her injections laced with steroids, but fearing their after effects she plainly refused. After 2 days all her symptoms returned with more force and rashes appeared on her skin as the medicine reacted on her body. She again felt the blood and mucus coming with her stools, which had become loose, almost liquid. Now she even felt a little pain and started writhing in pain and started crying.

“What’s wrong with me mom? I never tried eating anything, but the routine food and that came from the same kitchen, from where rest of my colleagues eat, why only me?” and began sobbing. Her mom also looked disturbed but patting her cheeks said encouraging her,” don’t worry child, everything will be taken care of, stop crying, you are just enhancing the symptoms, don’t worry.”

One of her friends after seeing her condition advised her to get Ayurvedic treatment from an Ayurvedic clinic in New Delhi. They tested and found that it was UC and treated her for that. Even that clinic also did not get the results as desired by Harpreet for the next 30 days.
