Is Ulcerative Colitis Curable in Ayurveda

Imagine 5000 years ago, A patient coming to an ancient vaidya, who lives on the verge of a village in adjoining deep forest.

The patient asks him in agony Oh Lord !

Is there any cure of his problem of bloody diarrhea, weakness, mucus in stool, weight loss, pain and cramps in abdomen.

The patient is scared and looking for a permanent solution to his problem. He doesn’t know it will be called Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease after 5000 years. He is depressed, sad and in deep despair. He is staying in his room not going out because he knows if he goes out he may have to find a toilet. His life seemed ruined to him and he may even developed suicidal thoughts.

Ulcerative colitis, Bloody diarrhea, Weakness, Mucus in stool, Weight loss, Abdominal pain, Abdominal cramps

What Would The Ancient Sage In The Forest Do?

Will the Indian saint 5000 years ago speak in English and take out his feather pen and prescribe medicines for ulcerative colitis on a piece of himalayan birch ( Bhurja patra )?

Or he will speak in English and say

Hey man !

You got to go for a colonoscopy, endoscopy, Fecal calprotectin and some blood tests Or will he write down the name the disease as ulcerative colitis or crohn’s disease and some chemical based medicines like Mesalazine, steroids or immune suppressants ?

No !

He wouldn’t know what it would be called in English after 5000 years. He wouldn’t know the name will be Crohn’s disease, named after Dr. Burill Crohn in 1932 AD. He wouldn’t know it will be called ulcerative colitis after thousands of years.

He would name it as Aama Janya Grahni with Raktatisaar or PittaAtisar in Sanskrit. He wouldn’t know after 5000 years, only a few Indian Ayurvedic vaidyas will be able to decode this terminology and correlate this to ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

He would continue to write something in ancient language Sanksrit and recommend him to eat certain blood clotting or astringent leaves like Dalbergia sisoo, Mimosa pudica leaves juice or extract, Durva grass juice or bark of certain herbs like Kutaz tree bark decoction or a fruit pulp of unripe Bael/Aegle marmelos fruit or ask him to drink Pomegranate juice everyday.

He already knows in detail that Unripe fruit pulp of Aegle marmelos is good for diarrhea and Ripe fruit pulp is good to relieve constipation but how would he knew that ??

He wouldn’t know that some botanist after 5000 years will name the kutaz tree as Halorrhena Antidysentrica in Latin but he is already using the herb to cure the bloody diarrhea.

This mystic vaidya already knows that the bark of this tree Kutza is having anti diarrheal and anti dysentery properties.

Why the need arose to name this tree as antidysentrica?? Who told the new scientists of 19th century to name it like that ???

May be the scientists of 19th century, who were naming the plants in Latin, read the ancient texts written in sanskrit language over the fragile papery bark of birch tree.

By the way, Birch is called BhojPatra or Bhurj patra in India where all Indian vedic scriptures were written thousands of years ago.

Birch is a tree found in Himalayas and also very common in Europe. May be the papery bark of birch lured ancient sages to use the bark as a paper.

May be the scientists of 19th century found themselves that oh ! This kutaz tree bark is having anti-dysentery properties so let’s name it anti dysentrica and never referred to Ayurvedic texts.

Whatever the reason or the method the new scientists adopted for naming but they concluded to name this powerful astringent tree as Halorhena antidysenteica.

Meanwhile the ancient maharishi didn’t write English name of the disease but instead he wrote something which is alien to modern world.

He wrote AmaJanya SanniPaitik Pitta-Atisara with atipravriti of AnnaVaha Srotas with Pitta vridhi or simply AmaJanya RaktPittaAtisara.

This is something which goes above the head to the modern world scientists:-) and they are so busy in discovering modern drugs.

They don’t even have time to look into ancient texts and rediscover or research these written secrets.

Why don’t these scientists who are running ahead to find cures so desperately, try to take a dip in the ocean of Ayurveda and find out the treasure, which is already there.

The maharishi however will analyze the Prakriti (Constitution) of the person and write down his Prakriti and Vikriti (Imbalance).

He will examine the naadi (pulse) to see the imbalance of the doshas known as Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

He would say your disease prognosis is Sadhya (Curable) , Asadhya (Incurable) or KrichhSadhya ( Curable with difficulty) depending upon various factors.

In this case of u Aam Janya RaktPittaAtisara he would say it’s KrichSadhya, which means curable but with difficulty.

This means that the disease can be cured depending upon patients age, prakriti, race, strength, stage of the disease, chronic nature of the disease etc.

After this he will start the treatment of the disease.

The modern scientific people will not be able to interpret these terms because they don’t know how to read Sanskrit language and shrugg it off as its coming from a third world country.

Everything coming from Ayurveda seems alien to modern world. Because they wouldn’t try to read the ancient texts in Sanskrit or even the translated versions. Sometimes the translation can also be inaccurate and can be misleading.

That’s why the modern people think the pyramids were made by aliens and many ancient Indian temples were also built by aliens.

The reason for this thinking is that it was difficult to decipher and study the sanskrit language or ancient languages or they were not translated into English.

There were not enough translated versions of ancient texts available in English but now that’s not the case.

The ancient sages are now known as Ayurveda experts. Ayur means life and veda means knowledge.

The knowledge when read from ancient books is called information. The information gathered by reading books, listening to lectures and seminars or internet..

This information when perceived and interpreted and applied for the benefit of all is called wisdom which comes from within.

People are awarded noble prizes for such works of wisdom.

If modern scientists just decipher concepts of Ayurveda and apply them on their patients and do clinical trials in their own language or methods, I am sure every single chapter of Charaka Samhita can fetch a noble prize.

Now What Is This Charak Samhita??

Samhita means a text book. Charak was an ancient sage who wrote down this ancient  wisdom in a text book. The knowledge which was floating  among monks and sages and which was just in the air or verbally taught to students under the trees.

He wrote down all lectures which were given to him.

Ayurveda doctors study this ancient text Charak Samhita in their modern day syllabus of 5 and half years degree course called BAMS ( Bachelor of Ayurvedic medicine and Surgery)

After 5 years of rigorous studies of modern medicine subjects + Ayurvedic subjects, They can also opt to do MD which is a 3 years regular course in Ayurveda universities and this MD is working in hospitals and doing the research work and  writing down a thesis on certain topic.

So there is a lot going on in Ayurveda world. The ancient rishis are now modern day vaidyas who studied herbs and understanding the ancient language and translating it into English.

The professors in these Ayurvedic institutes are helping the IT companies to make softwares to analyze pulse in ancient way, analyze prakriti, Vikriti, writing down books on usage of herbs etc. and how to interpret the whole concepts of Ayurveda in modern context.

Coming Back To The Topic

Is It Possible To Cure Ulcerative Colitis in Ayurveda ??

We can say now that according to Ayurveda texts, we are not treating Ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease.

We are treating a disease named AmaJanya RaktPittaAtisara.

Which is classified in Ayurveda as  KrichhSadhya (Curable with difficulty).

So it’s possible to cure or bring remission but with difficulty. The cure can be named as remission by many modern doctors but it doesn’t make any difference to an Ayurvedic vaidya because as long as a patient is living a healthier life for many years without medicines and the treatment works without any side effects.

Ayurvedic Herbs Used In Ulcerative Colitis Treatment

What Are The Various Herbs Used In Ayurveda For The Treatment Of Ulcerative Colitis ?

1. The Herbs For Bloody Diarrhea

I have used these herbs growing in various parts of India. From Himalayas, Kashmir to South India and from Kutch, Rajasthan.

Special herbs like Daemnocarpus Draco growing only in small Islands of Andeman and Nicobar are used to stop bleeding.

It was hard to get all these herbs collected and transported to our premises in Mohali, Punjab from various cultivators, wild herb collectors from various villages located far off places.

The other herbs like Woodfordia fruiticosa which grow in Himalayan region.

2. The Herbs To Control Loose Motions

The herbs like Halorhena antidysentrica.

3. The Herbs To Make Stools Firmer And Heal The Ulcers

Bael fruit pulp or Belgiri Churna by PlanetAyurveda.com and Kutazghan Vati.

4. The Herbs To Heal The Ulcers And Wounds Inside The Intestines Or Colon

Arjuna, Mimosa Di, Coolstrin A, Coolstrin B and Coolstrin C, and powders like Hemostop B and Hemostop Astringent.

5. The Herbs To Balance The Physical Constitution, Relieve The Stress Of The Person

Bramhi, Ashwagandha and Shankhpushpi and supplements like Nature Amino Powder, Nourish Maxx as they help to gain weight and  they are 100 % natural and free from milk solids or other chemicals. These 2 are purely made from herbs powder like Musli, Gokhru, Shatavari and Ashwagandha.

6. The combination of corals, pearls, agate and other cooling sea shells which are purified to work as medicine to cool down the fire element imbalance which is causing the inflammation in the gut and heal the ulcers. The combination is called Pitta Balance explained in classical texts by ancient ayurvedic vaidyas and saints and currently developed by Planet Ayurveda.

7. Physiological Counseling, Guidance And Assurance

Many doctors say half the problem is solved if the doctor is not stressed out over the outcome of the disease. A confident doctor who knows about the disease, can give positive vibrations to the.patient and guide the patient how to heal the inflammation by watching his diet properly and giving him confidence too and taking out the fear from his mind.

Ulcerative colitis is inflammation in the colon and gut brain relation is fairly established now aways.

Fear Aggravates The Problem

Imagine what fear can do to your gut. If you are scared to death, you will pee in your pants and pass the stool.

Same is happening with the colitis patients. They are so scared of the prognosis or the future of the disease told by doctors and also after reading over internet that the disease is for whole life, you have to live with it and you will develop cancer and you will have to undergo surgery and it’s Incurable disease.

These emotions have great impact on the mind of a patient suffering from Ulcerative colitis. He always thinks how it can be cured? Why Ulcerative colitis can’t be cured when we have so much development in the field of medicine and most advance hospitals.

The biggest fear is will it turn into a colon cancer?

So the patient needs clear guidance on this topic.

Ayurveda however at another hand is a different story.

It’s not about looking forward and discovering new treatments but it’s about looking backwards and finding cures for "AmaJanya RaktPitta Atisaar" Combined with symptoms of AmaJanya SanniPaitik Pitta-Atisara which is disease mentioned in Ayurveda with closest symptoms seen in Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis.

8. Role Of Diet In Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

There is a saying in Ayurveda if the diet is wrong then there is no use of medicine. If the diet is right then there is no need of medicine.

In either case, diet alone can be sufficient in many cases to heal the ulcers and put the patient in remission.

Many doctors say the colon is not the place where digestion is happening. It’s just a waste bin which is a totally wrong statement.

I have heard this from patients. That their doctor has told them this that there is no influence of food in Ulcerative colitis and only way to get healed is consume the pills like azathioprine, prednisolone, budesonide,  sulphasalazine, mesalamine  and immuno suppressants biological injections like adalimumab, infliximab, Rituximab, vedolizumab and common brand names of these are Lialda, Vegaz, Asacol, Mesacol, Injections of Biologicals like Humira, Infliximab, Stelara,

Sachets of  Pentasa, Rowasa,  and immunity suppressing pills like Azoran, Imuran and steroids like Predmet, Budez etc.

According to Ayurveda, faulty digestion leads to generation of intermediate molecules of digestive process called endotoxins or Ama.

These are created due to faulty diet, incompatible food.

They can cause ulceration, fermentation and damage to the inner lining of colon or even trigger an autoimmune response.

So diet is very important. You would agree with me that humans are mammals but we are different in many ways.

We call ourselves evolved species.

We developed clothes to protect our skin. We sit in air-conditioned rooms. The sun can’t reach to our skin. We deprive ourselves from sunlight and vitamin D.

We developed mobiles, flashy lights, street lights, discotheques, pubs, stadiums, theaters and we are working full day sitting on a chair and in the evening straining our eyes and ears to the fullest.

We eat food which was brought into our refridgerators and store shelves from the factories and not from the forests.

Those who didn’t evolve are swimming in the big lakes, living in the forests, no clothes and no flashy lights.  They sleep in time when the sun goes down.

Their bones are stronger because they don’t consume vitamin pills or sachets but only fresh berries or fruits and even the carnivores consume food which is sufficient to fill their stomachs for once in a day.

They don’t store it in refrigerators to eat it later or pack it.

The big thing is they don’t even consume milk and milk products from other species. Only their mothers milk but we consume milk, cheese, sour food, spicy food, sweet food all together.
So we need to re- evolve ourselves. No doubt out life span or life expectancy might have increased but the quality of life is deteriorating.

Go back and grasp the best from the nature and history of mankind.

Utilize the inventions and discoveries for our use and not only for sensory pleasures or comforts.

Some doctors say you can consume lactose free milk…but I would say No.

Milk is not only having lactose. It has many other protein molecules like Casein and fats which are difficult to digest.

What To Eat – Diet In Ulcerative Colitis And IBD

Your body is your best indicator of what suits you.

Eat as per your prakriti or your own constitution or body type. So analyze your Prakriti (Constitution) at our website. Visit Link:- www.planetayurveda.com/prakriti-analysis

Mainly you can eat cooked vegetables and avoid raw salads.

We have to avoid fiber but still have to consume nutrients rich food. So choose the best for you but below are my suggestions.

In severe cases of weight loss, all food items are recommended to avoid malnutrition especially bone broth or soups of lentils like Moong dal with Ghee for vegetarians.

Under all circumstances avoid Milk, Cheese, Butter, milk solids, tea with milk, chocolates, whey protein, kefir, fermented milk and citrus fruits and sour fruits.

In many ancient texts when explaining about the disease "Sangrahani" buttermilk or Takra is recommended but I would suggest to avoid it as most of the people don’t know how takra  is made and sometimes it’s heavy liquid.

Moreover Ulcerative colitis is not simple "Sangrahani" Sangrahani can be correlated with IBS and IBS is entirely different disease than colitis.

So in those situations, if Chaas or Takra suits you, then you can have it home made but it is preferred that you avoid it and also milk products.

Ayurvedic texts have recommended the use of thin takra or buttermilk but I have seen in colitis the results are 50-50. In colitis sometimes we need to block the open channels of " PurishVaha Srotas"  and we need something which blocks the channels temporarily. Thick Curd is described in Ayurveda as most efficient Channel blocker or " Abhishyandi"

So use Thick yogurt as channel blocker for temporary purposes and also for nutrition and use as a probiotic. It suits most of the people. If it’s sour, don’t consume it.

More About Diet To Be Taken For Ulcerative Colitis

Boiled potatoes, roasted or boiled sweet Potatoes, Taro root  (Arbi), Boiled Carrots, Boiled beets, Boiled corn, Bananas. Bananas and Pomegranate juice is the best.

Round gourds, Ashgourd, bottle gourd, Zucchini, pumpkins, squash, pointed guard, Ivy guard ( Parval) are good.

Cucumbers can be avoided in salads but Not raw steamed or cooked can be consumed if they suit you.

Rice – Anytime of rice are good. Red, black or even white rice is fine. Khichdi is excellent for weak intestines.

Bread – All kinds are ok but white is easy to digest. So white flour is fine but no nutrition in the white bread. So make sure you consume other food items rich in natural vitamins and minerals.

Green juice made from Coriander leaves is rich in nutrition. Consume 20 ml daily.

Noodles – Gluten free like Rice noodles are ok. Ok ok type but not so good from Ayurvedic perspective.

They don’t have any nutrition but only sugar. So they are going to increase the weight and they don’t provide much nutrition but only sugar.

So in case of very lean and thin patients, they are recommended by modern doctors but Ayurveda prefers use of Rice or Khichdi or Rice gruel made with split moong/ Masur dal.

It helps to increase the weight by providing sugar from rice but also vitamins  from rice, minerals from moong dal or yellow lentil.

Millets – Bajra, Rafi, Jowar, foxtail, Barnyard, Finger millet, Kodo,  Barley -these  can be consumed without a problem.

Oats and Quinoa, Buckwheat- All have high fiber content. So check if they suit you.

Non Veg – Strictly Avoid sea food, Mutton, Beef, Pork.

Salmon Fish can be consumed with caution if it suits you and that too without much spices.

Chicken soup can be consumed without spices, chillies, onion, garlic.

Turmeric can be consumed with caution. Ginger should be avoided.

Red and Green chillies are avoided at all costs. Black pepper is fine in small quantity.

Foods To Be Consumed With Caution In Colitis

Fiber rich green vegetables – Cabbage, spinach, mustard greens, Kale are full of iron and fiber. So should be taken with extreme caution.

Boiled or mashed or sequestered or cooked thoroughly and consumed only during mild colitis. If the frequency increases, stop them immediately.

Celery or Coriander leaves juice 10 ml in a day can be tried.  Homemade Wheatgrass juice 5 to 10 ml per day can also be tried. If it suits you, then you get a lot of iron, calcium and magnesium.

Raw salads should be avoided.

All cereals and lentils can be consumed with caution. Split moong beans and other split beans are good to be consumed instead of whole beans.

Kidney beans ( Rajmah), Chick peas ( White chana), Black gram ( Kala Chana), Black lentil ( Urad dal) can be consumed after soaking overnight and boiling it in the morning and cooking it after that. They are rich sources of proteins but make sure to eat them only if you can digest them.

Humus made from white chick peas can also be consumed but with caution.

Milk of plant origin can be taken. Soy milk, Almond milk, Tofu, Rice milk or Oats milk can be consumed without a problem.

Avoid tea with regular cow or Buffalo milk. You can consume tea made from almond milk.

Avoid – Radish, Turnips, French beans, mushrooms, bittermelons ( Karela), Cauliflower, Broccoli, French beans, Tomatoes, Garlic, Onion, Okra ( Bhindi) , Eggplants ( Baingan) , Green peas, Cabbage, Beetroot, Onion greens, Mint leaves.

Peanut butter is heating in its properties in general so it should be avoided.

Aloe vera – Aloe vera can cause purgation or severe diarrhea and some people consume it because their doctor told them that Aloe vera is good.  Don’t consume it.

I agree Aloe vera is good for many health concerns but not for colitis. It’s good for colon cleansing and constipation. It can behave like a purgative as its described as "Bhedni" in Ayurvedic texts.

Non Vegetarian Food – Salmon Fish, Yes, it can be consumed  but only without marinating, without tomatoes, ginger ,onion or garlic.

Only salt and some black pepper is ok.

Chicken – To stay away from all non Vegetarian Food is recommended. But for meat eaters-
White chicken is ok. soup, or bone broth is fine if not spicy.

Under all circumstances- Avoid all other heavy meats like red meat – Mutton, Beef, Pork, sea food etc.

Salmon Fish however is ok and well tolerated by many.  So you try it with caution.

Avoid other sea foods like snails, Prawns, Crabs, lobsters, other fishes like Tuna, Fugu, Bonito, swordfish, sea bass, sardine or Red snapper etc.

Salmon or white flesh fishes are ok but make sure not to eat them too much as fish is heating in nature and can aggravate Pitta. So it’s better to be vegan.

Eggs – Yes, can be consumed but white part is easier on the gut but for nutrition you can use the whole egg too if the condition is stable..

Alcohol – All alcoholic beverages should be avoided including beer. Some people consume beer,  champaign or white wine saying it’s cool but they are not. The body sees them all as alcohols. So all type of alcohol is bad.

Chips- All kinds of chips are bad.

Packaged food – Not good at all.

Industrial white sugar – Not good.

Jaggery – ( Gur or Shakkar) Can be tried mixed  warm Cows Ghee especially in patients who want to gain weight bit not too much. Only 2 tablespoonfuls of ghee and 2 tablespoonfuls of Brown Jaggery ( Shakkar)

South Indian Food – Idly and Dosa, Poha and Utthapam – can be consumed with coconut chutney with a lot of caution in small quantity. Avoid them if there is discomfort or pain in abdomen..

Avoid sambar with spices and tamarind and moringa sticks.

About Coffee and Avoid tea

Herbal Teas like Green teas or even ordinary tea are not recommended as they can cause Vata imbalance, Pitta aggravation but they are astringent and therefore can sometimes give symptomatic relief in diarrhea.

If you want to add milk, just add almond milk or soy milk in that. So use with caution.

Same is the case with coffee. It’s hot in tendency but astringent in taste and Pitta aggravating. So those who are addicted to tea or coffee can take 1 cup a day but with caution and those who want to add milk, they can add soy, rice, Oats or almond milk.

Herbal tea made from Jeera, Sounf, Ajwain ( Cumin, Fennel, Thyme)  can be consumed in case of Gas. We at Planet Ayurveda do have "GR Gas relief Kaada" which can be made into a tea and consumed at 5 pm once everyday for gas, cramps, Bloating.

Ajwain has special component called Hyoscine butyl bromide in it. It’s excellent antispasmodic and works best remedy for cramps, pain, gas and Bloating.

Many people who reach hospital with renal pain, gall stone pain or other abdominal pains get injection Buscopan which has the  active ingredient   called Hyoscine butyl bromide which is found in Ajowain ( Thyme or Thamian) or Parseek Yavani ( or Khurasani Ajwain or Latin name Hyocyamus niger.

Coconut water – It’s elixir of life for colitis and IBD patients. Everyone can consume it. Fresh is always recommended.

Don’t consume dry coconut or inside fruit of coconut. Just the water.

Fizzy water – Carbonated water or soda drinks – Not Good at all.

Dry fruits or nuts – Only overnight soaked and peeled almonds or walnuts are fine. Avoid all other nuts and seeds like cashews, ground nuts, pumpkin seeds or other seeds.

Berries- Avoid all berries. Most of them are sour. Strawberries, blueberries, Raspberries, Bilberries and all other berries.

Raisins and Dates, Dry dates, figs, Dry Apricots- Avoid them too.

Energy drinks or electrolyte drinks – No energy drinks or soft drinks. Coconut water is fine. You can take coconut water + Pomegranate juice.

Fruits – Boiled and mashed apples are good Pears are also same. They are good. Avocados, Custard apples, Dragon fruit are good. Bananas are very good.  Mulberry are fine. Ripe guava is ok. Lychee, Rombutan  are fine. Melons and cantaloupe are also fine if tolerated well. Sugar cane juice can be tried but too much sugar can cause fermentation in the gut  so you can try it with caution. Mangoes are very bad. Sorry for that. You can consume Papaya but with caution. Avoid all citrus fruits like Lemons, oranges, pineapples, kiwi, tomatoes, Tamarind, Vinegar  etc. Amla is sour but can be consumed as its post digestion properties are sweet but some people complain about aggravation of symptoms with Amla too.

Olives – Not good

Bell peppers are not good

French beans, mushrooms, garlic, onion, peas, – Not good , Cabbage, Broccoli raw form not good.

Sometimes soups can be tried.

Avoid butter too.  Ghee is ok.

Oils for cooking – Olive oil not good as its heating. Can take – Mustard oil in small quantities is ok. Ghee is good. Rice bran oil or Sun flower oil can be consumed but Sesame oil is the best.

Apple cider vinegar, Aloe vera – Not good

Honey – Although it’s hot but can be consumed sometimes with caution.

Soy sauce can be consumed in small quantity.

Exercise in Ulcerative colitis

Running, Gymming and heavy exercises are not recommended but some of my patients are doing Gymming without a problem.

Heavy exercises are not recommended. Light swimming is fine.

Late night sleep or staying awake at night -.Not recommended at all.

Long travel especially st night hours is not recommended.

While traveling eat Ripe bananas, Yogurt.

Drink fresh Pomegranate juice.

Breathing exercises – Bhastrika, deep breathing, are ok. Heavy strenuous Kapal Bhati should be avoided.

Fasting – Long fasting should be avoided

Rest and sleep – Day time sleep of 1 hour is recommended. It helps a lot. Afternoon nap is good. Night sleep quality is very important.

Use of Opium and Marijuana / Weed – These have gut relaxing, muscle relaxing, pain relieving properties. They can stop diarrhea and may even cause constipation but they are highly addictive and can cause other bigger problems in life. So I don’t recommend them at all.

Moreover they hamper normal physiology of gut and brain. So they are not recommended at all.   Moreover there are many more beautiful and better herbs which can help.
