Metastasis

What is Metastasis?

Metastasis is defined as the spreading of cancer from the primary site or an organ where cancer began to manifest at another site of the body and very common sites are the bones, liver, lungs, and brain. In metastasis, the broken cancer cells of a primary organ, start to travel through the blood or lymphatic system to the other organ and develop a new tumor there.

What are the Symptoms of Metastasis?

Symptoms are based on the affected organs of the body. Some organs are common than others which are affected by the cancer cells.

Some common symptoms occur in Lungs, liver, bone, brain and lymph nodes.

Why does Metastasis occur?

Metastasis occurs due to the lack of “adhesion chemicals” in cancer cells. In the normal cell, the presence of adhesion chemicals acts like a glue that helps to keep cell together with in their origin. Due to the lack of these chemicals in cancers cell, these cells break off from the tumors and spread to another organ via blood and lymph system and forms new tumor there.
