Punarnavasava (Punarnavasavam) – Benefits, Usage, Indications and Dosage

This medicine is specially indicated in the deficiency of iron, ascites, dropsy and spleen disorders. It has the diuretic and liver protecting properties. Herbs like Pippali, Shunti, Maricha, Darvi, Vibhitaki, Amla, Haritaki, Vasaka etc are used in the formulation of Punarnavasava. It is a fermented product which contains 5-10% of self-generated alcohol. This self-generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a source to provide the water and alcohol soluble active herbal components to our body.

Method of preparation
- Coarse powder of all the herbs is made.
- Sugar is dissolved in water and then filtered.
- To this sugar solution, the rest of the ingredients are added in a clean container.
- Container is sealed and kept for fermentation to a month.
- Filtered and medicine is ready.
Dosage
Adults
Take 15 – 25 ml. once or twice daily, after food. If required, it can be mixed with equal quantity of water.
Kids
Use of this medicine is safe in lower dose for the children above age of 5 years.
During Pregnancy and lactation
- During pregnancy this medicine should be taken only under medical supervision. Avoid the self-medication during pregnancy.
- During lactation period can be taken under doctor’s advice, for a short period of time.
