Abstract

Charaka Samhita is written by Acharya Charaka, who is an ancient ayurvedic scholar. Charaka samhita consists of eight sthanas: Sutra sthana, Nidana sthana, Indriya sthana, Chikitsa sthana, Vimana sthana, Sharira sthana, kalp sthana and siddhi sthana. Charaka samhita explains about the diseases, their pathology, their causes, Management and complications. In this article we will discuss the fourth chapter of the charaka samhita sutra sthana named Shadvirechan shatashrityam adhyaye.

Introduction

This chapter deals with the Five basic Dosage forms which are panchvidha kasaya kalpana (Swaras, kalka, Kwatha, hima, phanta). In these five of these, the hot infusion has the least strength and is light to digest. Swarasa is the strongest and is hard to digest. Different parts of the planet which are to be used, 50 Different groups which consist of 10 herbs with common action which creates five hundred decoctions has been mentioned in this chapter and also that a wise physician should know the application of these drugs externally and internally.

Six Hundred Evacuatives

There are total six hundred purgatives, 345 formulations for vamana and 245 for virechana, 133 formulations of the madanaphala (Randia dumetorum), 39 formulations of devadali (Luffa echinata), 45 formulations of Ikshvaku (Lagenaria siceraria), 60 of dhamargava (Luffa acutangula), 18 of kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica), 60 formulation of kosataki (Luffa acutangula), 110 of Syama and Trivrit (Operculina turprthum), 12 of Aragvadha (Cassia fistula), 16 of lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), 20 of Snuhi (Euphorbia neriifolia), 39 of saptala (Acacia concinna) and sankhini (Canscora decussata) and 40 of danti (Baliospermum montanum) and dravanti (Jatropha Glandulifera).

Varieties Of Decoction

There are five types of decoction

  2. Pungent
  3. Dour
  4. Astringent

Panchvidha Kashaya Kalpana

  1. Swaras – the juice extracted from a herb by a mechanical process is known as Swaras.
  2. Kalka – It is the Bolus prepared with herbs with juice intact and is in spherical shape.
  3. Kwatha – It is an herbal decoction of an herb which is prepared by boiling a drug and reducing it to half.
  4. Sheeta – It is a cold Infusion, which is prepared by keeping the coarsely powdered herb in boiled water and kept overnight.
  5. Phata – It is a Hot Infusion, in which the herb is kept in Hot water for sometime and then squeezed and filtered out.

Potency

In these five of these, the hot infusion has the least strength and is light to digest. Swarasa is the strongest and is hard to digest. All these preparations are advised in reference to the Strength of the patient and condition of the disease.
