Vidangarishta – Benefits, Usage, Indications and Dosage

Introduction
Vidangarishta is a herbal formulation which comprises of 5-10 percent of autogenic alcohol in it. This self -produced alcohol and water present in the product act as a mediator to transport water and active alcohol dissolving herbal substances to the body.
Vidangarishta can also be called Vidangarist, Vidangarishtam, Vidangarishta. It is used as a herbal antidote for abscess and for curing thigh cramps, urinary calculi, wry neck and fistula.

Method of Preparation
The Kwatha dravyas (decoction herbs) are washed and dried and crushed to form a coarse powder. After that these are added in 98.304 liters of water and boiled till the amount is reduced to 12.288 litres. The decoction is then filtered, the sandhana dravya and the prakshepa dravyas are added to this and stirred to form a homogenous mix. The obtained decoction is then transferred to a clean container coated with ghee and kept away for fermentation for a period of 30 days. When the process of fermentation is completed, the constituents are strained and is stored in amber colored bottles in a cool, dry and dark place.
Dosage
12 – 24 ml mixed with equal quantity of water after meals two times a day.

Contraindications
This formulation should be avoided during pregnancy, but it can be consumed during the lactation period under medical supervision. Diabetic patients should also consult a doctor before taking this medicine. Over dosage should be avoided.
