Why was 21 December declared as World Meditation Day by the United Nations?
“If you want inner peace and relaxation, then start practising meditation.”
Meditation – A practice that involves focusing the mind and eliminating the distractions to achieve mental clarity, focus , calmness and much more. The benefits that a person gets by practising meditation can not be described by a pen and a paper. It is something that a person can feel within. One can experience increased awareness, improved concentration, reduced stress by promoting overall well-being. It fills life with abundant mindfulness, relaxation, and peace. It brings the ability to being in the present moment and letting go of worries about past and future. Therefore it is a practice that is not based on any religion but on humanity. Every human should practise it in order to make this world a beautiful, a happy and a peaceful place for all human beings. It can be done in short bursts or extended periods, depending upon personal preferences and goals.
Acknowledging all the factors, benefits, power and need of meditation for everyone’s life, the United Nation declared to celebrate World Meditation Day on 21st December with the theme of “Cultivating peace and unity through meditation” for the year 2024. This is a huge decision that is taken by the UN to boost mental as physical well-being, enhance focus and to spread positivity because the stress and anxiety rate keeps on increasing day by day.
Why 21 December?
21st December is chosen as world meditation day as it coincides with the winter solstice – the time when the sun’s apparent path is farthest south from the equator. It is a powerful day spiritually. It indicates the beginning of a new season, a new chapter of life. Solstice means the standing of the sun. time to honor the magnificent sun as it borns again on this darkest night, indicating a new beginning. This is a time for deep rest of thoughts and unsettledness of mind. Also this falls on exactly 6 months of World Yoga day which is celebrated on 21st June. and therefore this is the best day to be chosen for World meditation day.
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar – A global spiritual leader and a humanitarian the founder of Art of Living is going to address the UN on this first World Meditation Day on 21st December. He will host a worldwide live stream which unite millions of people all over the world on this auspicious time of reflection and renewal.
