About Urticaria (Hives)

It is a red patchy eruptions on the outer surface of the skin. They form flat plaques on the skin which are reddish in color and which may join together to form bigger patches.

Urticarial patches which are also called as hives occur as a reaction to some allergen or some drug reaction. They patches or welts may appear anywhere on the skin from hands to face to tongue to almost anywhere and everywhere.

It usually resembles angioedema but are different from it. Angioedema usually affects the deeper layers of the skin while Urticaria affects only the superficial layers of the skin.

What Causes Hives or Welts?

Hives, also known as welts appear on the surface of the skin in response to some allergic reaction which develops in the body on exposure to some drugs or medicines.

Whenever there is an allergic reaction in the body, certain chemicals like histamines and interleukins are released from the body which reach the affected site or sometimes the whole skin or body and produce swelling, itching, redness and other similar systems.

  • Always wear loose and flowing clothes, tight garments irritate the skin and may make it inflamed.
  • Avoid using too much of soap on the skin as the alkali ne nature of soap may make the skin too dry and hypersensitive.
  • Apply cool water or a cold ice pack on the affected area. You can also put the hand under running water for instant relief.
  • Apply some soothing lotion which helps to subside the redness and inflammation of the area.
  • Absolutely avoid known triggers like foods, additives, heat, cold, alcohol, exertion and stress.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and the nutrition that it is providing. Be regular with your dose of vitamins and minerals in which ever form you may be consuming them.
