About Sinusitis
It is an inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are small spaces or cavities in the facial bones which have a moist and hairy lining.
There are total four sinuses in the skull bones. These are Frontal, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinus.
These sinuses are lined with a soft, pink and moist tissue known as mucosa. There are many small hair like projections which line the cavities of the sinuses. They are called cilia. The air in these sinuses drains directly into the nose and is believed to get humidified while breathing before it reaches the lungs.
The exact functioning of the sinuses is not very clear.
The maxillary sinus is the largest sinus of the skull and is located on either side of the nasal cavity in the cheek bones. It’s the largest of the four sinuses. Ethmoid sinus is located between the eyes, at the nasal bridge. Frontal sinus is located in the center of the fore head while the sphenoid sinus is located separately in the bones behind the nasal cavity.
Sinusitis usually involves three sinuses out of the four i.e. frontal, ethmoid and maxillary sinus.
Common Causes of Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuses usually results from the bacteria and viruses that may interact with the inner lining of the sinuses as the air enters the nose while breathing. Due to this infection or allergic reaction, there is increased production of mucous in the sinuses which get filled with it and hence, get blocked.
Environmental pollution and many other allergens are some other reasons why sinusitis is so common these days.
At times, there are certain structural defects in the nasal mucosa which cause hindrance in the free circulation of air in the sinuses. Such people are more likely to develop sinusitis than normal people.

About Acute and Chronic sinusitis
Acute sinusitis is a condition in which the inflammation is mild and usually subsides within a period of four weeks. It may be mild, moderate or severe depending upon the patient condition. Chronic sinusitis affects people for a prolonged time period which may be up to 12 weeks. These are the two basic types of sinusitis. In some people, sinusitis may occur three or four times in a year. This is then known as recurrent sinusitis.
Complications associated with sinusitis
Fever is one of the most common complication of sinusitis but it is not a very common finding. Brain is the closest vital organ to these sinuses so complications can be very severe if brain gets involved in some or the other way. Bacterial infection of the sinuses may infect the bones and the blood vessels resulting in brain infections like meningitis, abscess and even tumor in severe cases. Besides, sinusitis infection may spread to eyes, ears or nose as well.
