What is Constipation?
Constipation is a common health problem in which a person is not passing stools regularly or cannot completely empty their bowels. It can affect people of any age but it is more common during pregnancy and in older age.
Symptoms of Constipation
- Indigestion of food.
- Pain in the belly.
- Hard stools which are difficult or painful to pass.
- Stomach aches.
- Bloody stools.
- No bowel movements till three days.
- Straining during movements of bowel.
Causes of Constipation
Slow passage of food through our intestines causes constipation. Most of the time, this slow passage occurs in the colon. Busy schedule of modern lifestyles may be responsible for this health problem. Unhealthy eating and not drinking enough water are other causes of constipation. Lack of exercise in our daily routine may lead to constipation. Sometimes emotional problems can lead to constipation. Some medications can even cause constipation. Sometimes hormone imbalance can cause constipation. Constipation is more common in women than men.
Complications of Constipation
- Constipation can cause hard, dry stool to collect in the rectum and this condition is called as faecal impaction. It can cause problems in the long run.
- Leakage of stool can be possible due to constipation. This condition is called as faecal incontinence.
- Constipation can lead to piles in the long run.
Healthy Diet to Manage Constipation
Fiber rich foods should be taken in order to manage the symptoms of constipation. Include Raspberries, strawberries and blackberries in your diet. Air popped popcorn can be taken because it is a great low calorie diet. Dried fruits such as figs, raisins, prunes, apricots and dates are great source of fiber which can help to manage constipation. If you are taking bread in your diet, then the bread you are taking should be made from whole grains. Include broccoli in your diet.
Effect of Exercise on Constipation
Exercise decreases the time it takes our body to move the food through the large intestine. Hence it decreases the amount of water absorbed from the stool. Aerobic exercise is good for constipation as this exercise accelerates our breathing and heart rate. This helps to stimulate contraction of intestinal muscles which in turn help move stools out quickly.
